Imperialist Aggression and the Defence of Iranian Sovereignty

Once again, the spectre of another war haunts the Persian Gulf. The Biden—and now Trump—administration has orchestrated a massive military build-up in the region, amassing an armada of warships, stealth fighters, and bomber assets in the Gulf and the Arabian Sea. The stated pretext is Iran’s nuclear programme. The reality is a naked exercise in imperialist coercion designed to protect US and Israeli strategic interests at the expense of a sovereign nation.

This is not a conflict between equals, nor is it primarily about non-proliferation. It is the latest chapter in a long history of Western interventionism aimed at dominating resource-rich West Asia and disciplining any state that dares to resist the dictates of finance capital. The US, acting as the gendarme of global capitalism, seeks to dismantle any independent centre of power that threatens its hegemony or the regional supremacy of its closest ally, the apartheid and genocidal state of Israel.

The current escalation is breathtaking in its scale. The USS Gerald R. Ford and USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike groups have been deployed, alongside B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, F-22 Raptors, and a host of air defence systems.

Trump’s régime has made the objective clear: total surrender. It demands that Iran completely abandon its nuclear enrichment programme as a prerequisite for any deal. As Iran’s Foreign Ministry correctly states, negotiations based on “imposed conditions” cannot yield results; what is required is an agreement that restores the “violated rights of the Iranian people” and lifts the “oppressive US sanctions”. But for US imperialism, there can be no recognition of Iranian rights—only submission.

The sanctions regime itself is an act of war, a brutal economic strangulation designed to impoverish the Iranian working class and create conditions for regime change. As Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali has articulated, US policy proves that Washington respects national sovereignty only insofar as it serves its own hegemony. The current military build-up merely replaces the economic rope with the sword.

For Communists, the defence of Iran’s sovereignty is paramount. Not because the Islamic Republic is a socialist state—it is not—but because the principle of national sovereignty is a fundamental barrier to imperialist domination. The Iranian people have the right to determine their own future, to develop their own resources, and to resist the diktats of Washington and Tel Aviv. The working class internationally has no stake in a war fought by Wall Street bankers and arms manufacturers to secure their profits and strategic control.

We must expose the lies that underpin this drive to war. The claim that Iran poses an “imminent threat” is a fabrication. As analysts have noted, the real danger is the “chaos and instability” that would follow US aggression—the creation of yet another failed state in the region, a lawless vacuum from which only terrorism and further suffering can emerge. We have seen this movie before, in Iraq, in Libya, in Afghanistan, in Syria and elsewhere. The result is always the same: devastation for the working masses and enhanced power for the most reactionary elements.

Communist Parties and progressive forces in Ireland and across Europe must raise their voices in opposition. We must demand that our governments refuse to facilitate US aggression, deny the use of their territory and airspace for bombing campaigns, and instead defend the UN Charter principle that prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity of any state.

Iran has shown restraint, keeping its diplomacy alive even as the guns are aimed at its heart. It has stated its forces are on “high alert” to defend national sovereignty, a right enshrined in international law. The question for the international working class is simple: will we stand with the victims of imperialism, or will we allow ourselves to be dragged into another war for oil and empire?

There can be only one answer. Defend Iranian sovereignty. US and NATO forces out of West Asiat. No to imperialist war!
